Why we teach Hebrew:
Knowledge of Hebrew enables a Jewish person to connect with
Jews around the world.
The ability to understand the prayers and music during services
is enhanced when the
individual knows the meaning of each word.
Hebrew provides a rich and meaningful link to the past and
the present.
Readiness:
- Students learn to recognize each letter, the sound it
makes and its name.
- Students learn through interactive games, music and stories.
- Students are asked to look for Hebrew letters in the world
around them.
- Students initially learn prayers by rote, but will learn
to read individual letters, vowel letter combinations, and
then words and phrases.
K-3rd Grades:
Hebrew readiness is a part of each session.
Hebrew readiness is complimented by an age appropriate Family
Service during each session.
Lively music sessions also add to the natural reinforcement
process during each session.
4th-6th Grades: Midweek Sessions (Tuesday - 4:30 -
6:00 or Wednesday - 5:00 - 6:30)
Students are given diagnostic tests shortly after the beginning
of each semester, allowing teachers to zero in on needs.
An additional Hebrew teacher is on staff during both the
Tuesday and Wednesday sessions to provide small group assistance.
At the end of each semester, students participate in a "Prayer-a-thon,"
which provides opportunities for them to receive acknowledgement
for their efforts.
4th & 5th grade students receive an additional 30 minutes
of Hebrew reinforcement during the Sunday session.
By the end of 6th grade students should be ready to move
into the B'nai Mitzvah training program with the ability to
read and understand the prayers in the Shabbat morning service,
as well as be ready to master a Torah and Haftorah portion
with the aide of a personal tutor provided by the congregation.
