While B'nai Jehudah is a large congregation, we have always
programmed as a small intimate one as well. One of the best
avenues for that connection is the Havurah Program.
Havurot offers a way for newcomers and members of long-standing
to be part of a small group setting within the larger Temple
Family.
If the Havurah idea addresses a need that you have been feeling,
we encourage you to join us in this special program and invite
you to contact Rochelle Barash, Program Director at (913)
663-4050, ext. 132.
WHAT IS A HAVURAH?
The word "Havurah" comes from the Hebrew word "Haver",
meaning friend. A Havurah is a group of B'nai Jehudah members
who join together to enrich their lives and to reinforce the
spirit of Judaism in themselves and their children. Each Havurah
becomes a small community of congregants who meet in each
other's homes to study, socialize and celebrate Jewish life
together. The Havurah do not replace other events of B'nai
Jehudah, but instead they supplement and support the social,
religious and intellectual activities of B'nai Jehudah.
WHAT DOES A HAVURAH DO?
Havurah provides a commitment in a social atmosphere for interested
Jews to broaden their knowledge of Judaism, their Jewish skills,
and their social acquaintances within the congregation. To
this end, the group may plan activities such as a pot-luck
Shabbat dinner, a Purim or Chanukah party, building a sukkah
in a member's backyard, conducting a Havdalah Service, joining
together for a camping weekend, reading and discussing works
by contemporary Jewish authors and holding a Havurah Seder.
HOW LARGE IS EACH HAVURAH
&
WHO IS INVOLVED?
A Havurah is usually made up of between seven and ten families
or persons. The group may contain families all previously
unknown to each other, or a mixture of some old friends and
some new acquaintances. Depending on the nature and wishes
of the individual group, children may be included.
WHERE AND WHEN WILL THE HAVURAH MEET?
This will be decided entirely by the members of each Havurah.
Generally, each group will meet once a month at the home of
one of the members. Each group will determine the day, time
and place of meeting.
WHO IS A HAVURAH FOR?
Affiliated members of Temple B'nai Jehudah who desire to be
part of a more intimate community within the Temple Family.
A Havurah provides an opportunity for personal and spiritual
growth.
Please let us know of your interest for possible placement
