Cantor Sharon Kohn Cantor Sharon Kohn came to B’nai Jehudah in July of 2003. As part of the clergy team, she engages with the congregation in prayer, visits with members in times of transition, joy, sorrow and pain, and can be found teaching young and old. She is a graduate of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Music, with a Masters in Sacred Music and Investiture as a Cantor. She has served congregations in Texas, Louisiana and Ohio prior to coming to Kansas City. Sharon Kohn became a cantor to assist people in finding their Jewish voice by sharing Judaism through liturgy, ritual and music. One’s voice is more than just how we speak or sing. It is the unique point of view each person brings to all that he or she does. Kohn believes that Judaism requires us to explore our own uniqueness and to discover how our singular gift can build community and help repair what is broken in our world. Sharon was born and raised in central Illinois and graduated from Illinois State University. Theater was an early passion and she logged many hours backstage in the costume shops of Illinois Wesleyan University and ISU summer stock. She credits her parents for instilling in her a love of music, and her brothers for her love of baseball. Singing the national anthem at an Astros game fulfilled a lifelong dream. Sharon is proud to be a grandmother of 6, and to have helped raise 4 children: Carra Kane, Jason Simon, Joel Simon and Lexie Hallman. She enjoys baking, fiber arts, playing in the dirt and chocolate. She has been married to Rick Simon since 1989. |
